Handy Hint: If you want to stay in Port Douglas, try to choose the quieter eastern side of town.

The following recommendations are based on places I’ve actually seen and can recommend at the time of my visit. As a travel designer, a certain skill is needed to match travelers budgets and accommodation needs. Couples may not want to stay in a family resort – families require child-friendly accommodation with kitchen and playground facilities. So here’s my list of Port Douglas Accommodation Options:

1. Port Douglas Accommodation – Family Options

Cayman Villas Port Douglas

If you and your family are staying in Port Douglas, you’ll want to be within walking distance to shops, restaurants and supermarkets. A lot of us want a certain sense tranquility too – the Cayman Villas are perfectly located for both.

Cayman Villas are a centrally located Port Douglas accommodation options

The Cayman Villas have 2- and 3-bedroom apartments.  These apartments are well designed, spacious and stylish. This resort has three main buildings, each with three levels. Okay, so there is no elevator, but there is a heated swimming pool in the middle of the complex. Heated Pools are a great facility for children especially in the more moderate winter months between May and September.

Peppers Beach Club Port Douglas

First impressions are very important, right? So when it comes to presentation and general maintenance, this one ticks all the boxes. On our last visit, we could see that most accommodations put a lot of effort into maintaining their properties to a high standard.

You’ll find that Peppers give a good first impression. The pools are absolutely beautiful and have a beach-like appearance. Couples are also likely to stay here.  The complex has bar, a grill restaurant and a gym. The ground floor rooms have direct access to the pools. Another big plus is the complementary guest parking and a 24 hour reception service. Elevators serve the majority of rooms.

Mandalay & Shalimar Beachfront Apartments

These sister properties are managed by one Company and are only 100 metres from the Port Douglas beach. The resort has two pools, one of which is heated.

There is a well maintained tennis court, BBQ facilities and children’s playing area. But bear in mind, they don’t have complimentary wi fi, gym or spa facilities. The 1-, 2-, 3- bedrooms apartments are spacious and modern.

Mowbray by the Sea Port Douglas

Mowbray is located close to the Port Douglas beach and is very close to the central village (5-10 minutes walk). Mowbray caters for a family or two couples together. It has 3 levels and a heated lap pool.  Mowbray was formerly managed by a corporate company, but it is now owner-operated. This has resulted in a more personalized boutique ambiance. When we visited, the facilities had just been updated and guest.  We really liked the fact that the apartments had their own balconies. Full kitchen facilities are included, a big plus if you wish to dine-in.

Garrick House Port Douglas

Garrick House is on the preferred side of town on a quiet palm tree lined street.  The advantage of staying here, is that you’ll be only metres from the beautiful Four Mile Beach These apartments are suitable for those travellers on a more restricted budget.

Options include Studio, 1- and 2-Bedroom apartments. The 2-bedroom apartments are on the third level and accessed by stairs. Garrick House has a small (currently) unheated pool and offers complimentary wifi. The owner is very approachable and helpful.

2. Port Douglas Couples Retreats

Shantara Resort Port Douglas

We stayed at Shantara for 4 nights and loved it.  Shantara is a privately owned dedicated couples-only apartment resort.  It is within a short walking distance from the village, yet in a serene area. Shantara has three levels and 2 pools.  However, it does not have a restaurant or bar. or bar. There is a separately owned award-winning Health and Spa in a separate part of the complex.

This is the apartment we stayed in and it was so incredibly private.  It had a certain flair in design to create intimacy – perfect for a honeymoon.

Actually, you can see the influence of the Italian owners who have managed to maintain this property to a very high standard. The kitchen is also well equipped. There is a complementary wifi with a generous daily limit of 1GB. What a pleasant surprise that was!

Mai Tai Resort Mossman

Now some travellers are seeking a totally different experience away from the town vibe.  The Mai Tai Resort ticks the box. It is surrounded by native bush within a rural area and really is the perfect retreat. At the time of my visit, Anthony Roxburgh and Andre de Walsche were the owners and their personal touches were everywhere.

This property has a strong Asian influence. There are four individual rooms, each with their own spacious courtyard. Breakfast is served in a delightful setting on the veranda overlooking the bush. At the top level of the Resort is a self-contained apartment with full kitchen, wifi and two bedroom facilities. This is definitely an adult-only retreat with tranquility at a premium.

3. Port Douglas Boutique hotels

Peninsula Boutique Hotel Port Douglas

While talking to local tour operators, we were made aware of the Port Douglas Boutique Hotel, which is located next the the local beach.

One thing to bear in mind is that not many Port Duglas Accommodation Options include breakfast or restaurant facilities.  The ones that do, are further out of town. This hotel has a breakfast buffet actually included in the daily rate.  We felt this was value for money and a pretty good deal! The majority of studio rooms at the Peninsula are ideally facing facing the beach (except 4 pool view units). The studios are spacious and very comfortable.

4. Port Douglas Eco Retreat

Thala Beach Nature Reserve Lodge

If you’re looking for ‘knock-out’ views on a private headland between Cairns and Port Douglas, you might want to consider the tree chalets at Thala Beach Resort.

However, we would definitely recommend that you book a bungalow overlooking the shimmering Coral Sea:

stunning views from cottage number 2 at Thala Beach resort

The buffet breakfast at Thala Beach is top notch with every conceivable hot and cold option, however at the time of our stay, we found the night dining was extremely disappointing. I would strongly suggest you travel the 15-min drive to Port Douglas where there are some excellent dining choices. (I voiced my concern to Management about the dinner and hopefully by now, this ‘glitch’ can be resolved.) Although wi-fi is not provided in the chalets, there is complimentary access throughout the main lodge.

5. Luxury Port Douglas Accommodation Options

Silky Oaks Lodge Mossman

Silky Oaks is a luxury retreat set in the middle of the Daintree Rainforest, adjoining the Mossman River. Mossman is a 20- minute drive from Port Douglas or around 1.5 hours from Cairns. Silky Oaks has the perfect blend of native bush and the luxurious, private setting of individual chalets.

Silky Oaks definitely have the ‘wow’ factor. The chalets are just gorgeous with polished wooden floors, stylish interiors and all the mod-cons. The hammocks on for verandah of each chalet, are a very nice touch. The restaurant dinner facilities are available for in-house guests only. The lodge provides a top-notch spa and health retreat and offers guided rainforest and cultural tours, bird watching and complementary cycle hire.

We enjoyed our stay in Port Douglas during the month of July when the temperatures were between 25-27 degrees. It was also a little less busy. By the way, our favourite place for excellent coffee was the Bookshop Cafe! I hope its still going strong when you get there!

wow there is quite some choice there to suit all requirements and budgets. Some stunning properties and what a great place to spend a month of NZ winter.

Yes Jan, once again, we’re reminded of how deceptive websites can be. It’s so good to be able to see these properties for ourselves. I forgot to mention that between the months November and May sea-swimming is not an option because of the ‘stingers’ (poisonous jellyfish). Great temperatures at these times.
