Farewell Spit Eco Tours

Collingwood | SOUTH ISLAND

Farewell Spit is more strictly protected than a national park. Vehicle access is granted only to supervised tours. Through sharing the experience of Farewell Spit we can help to raise public awareness of this precious ecosystem, so vital for migratory birds.

Eco Tour DETAILS

Most people choose the Eco Tour which explores the spit and stops in Puponga at the most northern point on the South island, Cape Farewell. From the cliff top, seals and their pups can be seen all year basking on the rocks below.

The next stop is Fossil Point at the beginning of the Spit, a popular hauling out place for NZ fur seals. Old fossils expose themselves among the rocks and sea life abounds in rock pools nearby. Approximately 30 km along the ocean beach is the Lighthouse reserve. There is a stop for 45 mins to allow an independent explore of the lighthouse, after which you can check out the pouwhenua and learn some of the maori legends about the spit. Refreshments are served  in the lighthouse keepers cottage.
