Wharekauhau is a luxury lodge set on 2200 hectares of farmland overlooking the rugged coastline of Palliser Bay on the southern tip of the North Island and provides uninterrupted panoramic ocean views from every guestroom.
Wharekauhau is New Zealand's second oldest Romney Stud and continues to operate as a working sheep station. It's been called one of the most spectacular farms on earth. Each room in the main lodge has a different ambience, from large open lounges to more intimate areas. Antique furniture and large fireplaces feature throughout the lodge. The main lounge has a grand yet intimate feel with expansive sofas and deep armchairs where Guests may relax and enjoy a glass of wine.
Guest accommodation is provided in 10 charming cottages located throughout the grounds, all within easy walking distance of the main house. Each cottage is special and placed to take full advantage of the magnificent views which Wharekauhau offers to mountain, bush, sea and sky. Natural materials are used throughout the guest suites, including clay tiles, pebble mosaics, plastered walls, rich New Zealand wool carpeting, cotton bed linen and hemp curtains.All Guest cottages have to option to interconnect.
Chateau Wellington is a 4,600 sq ft fully furnished three-bedroom house located 1km from the main lodge. It offers privacy and luxury with spectacular views; each room having an ensuite bathroom with separate shower and claw bath.
This cottage is designed along similar lines to the main lodge and is located 4km from Wharekaukau Lodge, therefore Guests own transport is advisable. The cottage has two double and one twin bedroom, two bathrooms with separate bath and shower, open plan living area with gas fireplace, underfloor heating, laundry, full kitchen and dining area.
Breakfast: Each morning Guests may partake of a sumptuous continental buffet, coupled with an extensive cooked menu.
Lunch: Lunch is provided either in the country kitchen or outside in the Courtyard as a picnic around the property
Dinner: Preceded by pre-dinner drinks and canapes in the lounge, dining at Wharekaukau resembles a private dinner party with Guests seated at grand tables.
Please note: Evening attire is smart casual - ties and dinner suits are not required, however it is suggested that male guests wear a long sleeved dress shirt, trousers and dress shoes.
Due to the remote location, a last-minute cancellation leaves very little chance of re-booking the cottage. Therefore a 100% charge of the total accommodation booked will be charged if a cancellation occurs 7 days out from arrival. Guests are encouraged to take out comprehensive travel insurance to protect themselves against any unexpected changes to their travel plans.
