Walter Peak Farm Tour Queenstown

Queenstown City | SOUTH ISLAND

Your tour will begin with an atmospheric trip acoss to Walter Peak in the TSS Earnslaw, a grand old steam ship representing an integral part of Queenstown’s pioneering history.

Embark on the picturesque Lake Wakatipu’s south-western shores where you'll spend a relaxing fews hours at the Walter Peak Farm. The Farm Tour is a wonderful, interactive experience for the whole family, with enough variation to keep everyone entertained and happy.

TSS Earnslaw Vintage Steamship, 1912:

This grand old lady of the lake rovided an essential link between the isolated farming communities along the lake and the outside world. At 48 metres long, she was the biggest boat on the Lake and carried passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies. Nearly scrapped in 1968, she was rescued and purchased by Real Journeys and put to work once again carrying passengers around the Lake. Since then the TSS Earnslaw has been painstakingly restored to its original condition – everything you see is pretty much like it was a 100 years ago. Today, the TSS Earnslaw is the only coal fired steamship in operation in the southern hemisphere.

Facts About Walter Peak High Country Farms:

At its peak, the station was one of New Zealand’s most famous with 170,000 acres, 40,000 sheep and up to 50 fulltime employees. The original homestead block of Walter Peak Station is now known as Walter Peak High Country Farm. Over time various permanent homes were established and these included the Colonel’s Homestead with its beautiful lakeside gardens.

The Walter Peak Farm Tour:

The rural host will meet you after you disembark from the TSS Earnslaw and take you for a walking tour of the farmyard. The first stop is the holding pens, where you can help feed the sheep and deer, and even get up close to the Scottish Highland Cattle. Then stroll through the lakeside gardens to the charming Colonel’s Homestead for a traditional high country morning or afternoon tea of scones and pikelets.

Afterwards the farmer will lead you over to the shearing shed where you can watch the farm dogs rounding up sheep from the hill paddocks, and see the farmer shear a sheep. You will then board the TSS Earnslaw for your cruise back to Queenstown.Morning or afternoon tea provided (scones, pikelets, tea/coffee/fruit juice). Option to add a Barbecue lunch to the experience. Duration 3hrs 30mins - Suitable for all ages.
