Although the central business district of Christchurch is undergoing exciting renovations, the city still lives up to it's name as a 'Garden City'. Fiordland comprises 1.2 million hectares of pristine national heritage park and provides a variety of outdoor activity such as trout fishing, kayaking and bush walks. Firodland is also blessed with exotic wildlife, including penguin which breed in the bush along the coast. The power of Fiordlands scenery never fails to enthrall travellers. The Fox Glacier township offers a more intimate “village” experience than its bigger neighbour, Franz Josef. Tucked into the rainforest-clad foothills of the Southern Alps, the township offers a range of quality accommodation, hotels, cafes, a general store and service station for motoring needs. The Fox Glacier offers a different type of glacier experience than the Franz Josef Glacier, and visitors are increasingly booking activities on both glaciers during their visit to Glacier Country. Kaikoura is located about half way between Christchurch and Picton.
