Imagine an urban environment where everyone lives within half an hour of beautiful beaches, hiking trails and a dozen enchanted holiday islands. Known as the 'Gateway to the Coromandel', Thames is only a ninety minute drive from Auckland. The main shopping location on the peninsula, Thames has a wealth of boutiques, a historic main street and the modern Goldfields Shopping Mall.
In the late 19th century, this town was one of New Zealand's largest - built on the pioneering industries of gold and Kauri logging. Today, its colourful history is still alive in the many pubs, buildings, museums and activities found in the area.
Fabulous twin harbour towns on the Peninsula's east coast, Tairua and Pauanui offer a superb setting beside the Pacific Ocean. Close by is Paku, a twin-coned Maori pa sculptured hillside that was once an island while offshore lies the Slipper, Shoe and Alderman Islands. A number of charter and fishing boats operate from both wharves and the beaches are perfect for safe swimming and surfing in most conditions.

Abel Tasman is NZ’s smallest national park with 22,350ha. It is famous for its golden beaches stretching from Marahau, near Motueka, to Wainui Bay, in Golden Bay. There are two walking tracks; the beautiful coastal track, and the inland track through the hilly centre of the park. Bring your own supplies and hiking gear. Near Marahau, and a short drive from Motueka, is Kaiteriteri Beach a favourite holiday spot with accommodation, restaurants, camping, playgrounds and golden sands.
Westport is special; the essence of Ireland's magical west. In ancient times, Maori travelled through Central Otago on their way to the pounamu rivers of the west coast. More recently, in the 1860s, Central Otago was the scene of a gold rush. Trails used by miners can still be seen winding over the hills. Stone cottages, a haunted hotel, cleverly engineered water channels, mines and machinery are other relics to discover.
Surrounded by striking mountains and deep alpine lakes, Wanaka provides a perfect setting for romance. Just one hour's drive from Queenstown, Wanaka is slower paced, although facilities are sophisticated and a variety of outdoor activities are on offer throughout the year.
The Aoraki Mount Cook Mackenzie region is situated in the centre of New Zealand's majestic South Island. The region is renowned for its incredibly clear starry nights, brilliant sunny days, remarkable turquoise blue lakes, valleys of emerald green and snow-capped mountains.
The Garden City of Christchurch is a stylish, understated boutique city where you can wander through the central city and uncover contemporary galleries, outdoor markets, hidden urban laneways, riverside restaurants featuring fresh local produce and some of Christchurch's best shopping boutiques.
The Avon River winds its way through the city and provides a lovely ambience for alfresco dining. The museum, art centre and cathedral are all within walking distance of each other, or you can take a round trip in the City's tram and disembark where you wish. If you're here for a few days or more, visit the beautiful seaside town of Sumner, or go north to visit Canterbury's premium vineyards.
