Trips and Tramps Guided Tours

On completion of the cruise, passengers rejoin the small coach and we begin our overland tour. If guests prefer shorter walks, they stay with the nature guide and enjoy a series of walks in a range of different environments. Our National Park concession allows us to access Gertrude Valley, Lake Gunn, Marian Gantry, the historic Hollyford Museum and Humbolt Falls, alongside the more traditional stops. We can tailor the day to the weather and seasonal highlights to ensure more enjoyment from the wilderness and wildlife in this World Heritage Area.

Also included include is a wilderness tea-break with complimentary billy tea, coffee and home style biscuits. Alternatively for passengers wanting a longer hike option, a 2.5 hour unguided walk to Key Summit on the renowned Routeburn Track is offered. This walk ascends up through lush beech rainforest and into the alpine environment with panoramic views of the surrounding Fiordland Mountains, alpine lakes and deep bush clad valleys. The groups then reunite before continuing along the Milford Road back to Te Anau.

• kepler Track guided half day walk

A half day guided walk along Lake Te Anau. Travel across Lake Te Anau by water taxi to Brod Bay with its clear water and white sands. Begin the easy 11 km walk following the lake edge through mountain and red beech forest. The track has a gentle gradient and is well maintained and is suitable for all abilities. The Trips & Tramps guide details native fauna and flora, explains the unique beech forest ecological cycle and shares conservation efforts made on the Kepler Track and Fiordland. Refreshments are made on a lake beach with complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits. During the walk passengers emerge from the bush and cross the Control Gates. This concrete structure provides a dam to control the flow of water out of Lake Te Anau. The track then opens out and travels through open grassland to the wildlife park with opportunities to view the rare flightless takahē, now restricted to the tussock grasslands of the Murchison Mountains of Fiordland. Other wildlife includes native waterfowl, weka, parakeets, tui, kea, kākā and pigeons. The walk finishes at the Department of Conservation Visitor Centre.
